Is our Faith Worthless?

by imreformedbaptist

Is the faith of Christians worthless? Yes, if Christ was not raised from the dead. “And if Christ has not been raised then your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.”(1 Cor 15:17 NAS)

Sin’s Penalty

Man’s spiritual condition is one of being “in his sins.” This means he is under sin’s penalty. He has broken God’s holy Law and is under its curse and the wrath of God abides over his head every breath he takes. According to I Cor 15:3, Christ died for sinners paying sin’s penalty. The resurrection was God’s testimony that He fully accepted that payment. “He who was delivered because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.” (Rom 4:25 NAS) Therefore, if Christ was not raised from the dead then the penalty was not paid and we are still in our sins. We are under its penalty.

Sin’s Power

This provides one of the “proofs” that He has been raised and is alive forever more. Why do I say that?  Every person that is under sin’s penalty is also under sin’s power. To be under sin’s power is to be its slave so that it is the practice of one’s life. In His death, Christ not only paid sin’s penalty, He also broke sin’s power over those for whom He died, so that when they are united to Him by faith they die to sin as their master and way of life. The scriptures make a direct link between the objective fact of Christ’s resurrection and the subjective experience of the believer who has been delivered from the slave master of sin.

“Therefore, we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” (Rom 6:4 NAS)

“And He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” (2 Cor 5:15 NAS)

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him…” (Eph 2:5-6 NAS)

The salvation of a sinner is as supernatural as the dead body of Jesus of Nazareth being raised and Him vacating the tomb and there is an inseparable link between them. Therefore, each time a person is set free from the prison house of sin by faith in Christ it bears witness to an empty tomb in Palestine. The Corinthians were examples of this. After listing many heinous patterns of sinful living Paul said to them, “Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” (1 Cor 6:11)

Does your life bear witness that Christ has been raised from the dead?

A new creature in Christ,

Pastor JJ
